Costa Kick Plastic Ambassador Program for Eyecare Professionals

In an effort to address the estimated 420 million plastic lenses (including new purchases and redos) disposed of by the optical industry every two years, Costa launched an ambitious new plan, paving the way for eyecare professionals and the optical industry to tackle the problem, according to Costa. PPS is supporting the Kick Plastic Ambassador Program and the accompanying Lens Recycling Program, an innovative initiative that encourages eyecare professionals to collect, recycle and repurpose plastic lenses from optical frames or sunglasses.

Costa is the leading manufacturer of the world’s clearest, polarized performance sunglasses. The iconic eyewear company was "born on the water" by a group of fisherman and is deeply concerned by the issue of marine plastic pollution. In 2015 Costa launched the Kick Plastic campaign with the goal of reducing their internal plastic footprint and activating their community to take action as well. Current projects with Costa include providing issue insight, campaign strategy, partnership management, community engagement initiatives, education program development and marketing support.

Costa Sunglasses - Kick Plastic Guide & Outfitter Program

In 2017 Costa launched a community action plan to activate fishing guides & outfitters to help achieve the goal of eliminating single-use plastic water bottles from guide boats within the decade. Program partners Yeti and Klean Kanteen offer steeply discounted products to help guides adopt best practices and broaden the Kick Plastic movement. Costa estimates that more than 1 million single-use plastic water bottles have been eliminated since the program's launch.

Plastic Pollution Solutions advised the Aquarium on desired outcomes, programming, agenda, suggested speakers and partners.

QUOTED

"You are changing the world! Today I opened a box of tea to find it packaged in individual plastic bags and said, 'Well, I'll never get this brand again, look at the bags!' My 12-year-old daughter replied, 'We should do one better, Mom. We should do one of the little steps we learned at school from Ms. Colabello and use our purchasing power to start change. We should send that plastic wrapper back to the company and tell them we aren't buying their products unless they stop using plastic.'"
